An important part of the trust’s work will involve bringing together young and old within communities on inter-generational community based oral history projects. Projects based in schools and youth and community groups will have a real and tangible benefit in the area of community cohesion and will help people to feel a sense of pride and belonging about the areas they live in.
The trust will also hold reminiscing sessions with groups of elderly people and individuals in such settings as care homes, community groups and luncheon clubs. Young people in schools and youth groups will learn about the part that their locality played in Britain’s industrial history, while the health and well being of elderly people is promoted through the stimulation of memories and the recognition of the important part they played in the success of the industries they worked in. Different generations working together in this way, exchanging information, new skills and memories, will lead to greater understanding of each other and to increased family and community cohesion.
